WAAV's President to Speak at International Train Communications Conference

WAAV's President Brian J. Smith has been invited to speak at the International Train Communications Systems Conference, dubbed the “WiFi on Trains” conference, to be held at the Royal Horseguards Hotel on June 10th & 11th. The private audience consists of executives from rail operators around the world.
Most train systems today use private networks for communications, but extending these networks for broadband applications is not always feasible. Private broadband networks have a high total-cost-of-ownership, and they must be maintained and upgraded at the expense of the transit agency. Mr. Smith will address using the latest advancements in cellular technology for these types of train communications and discuss the new concept of "outsourcing the network" to cellular providers as communication partners. Because using these commercial cellular networks has now become more economical than agencies deploying their own network along their right of way, they can be leveraged to provide broadband services in a range of applications. Live video security feeds or offering WiFi on trains are perfect examples of the types of applications that can be easily outsourced to these network providers. Some applications which require additional coverage area, more bandwidth, or redundancy may necessitate the use of multiple carriers.
